I heard this story on NPR this morning and it just made me mad. How is this even still news? We were one of the many writing about the negative long term effects of Groupon offers a year ago. Frankly, if you are a small business walking in to an online coupon agreement without doing your homework in this day and age you deserve what you get.
Gah. Now that that's out of my system....
John Byers, a Boston University computer science professor, actually did some good research that backs up what was being said over a year ago. That most customers that use online coupon services like Groupon and Living Social do not turn into regular customers and that those same coupon users are more likely to write negative online reviews on sites like Yelp. In my experience anectotally, and this bears out in the NPR story, the only types of businesses that seem to be able to use the online coupon services to some degree of success tend to be restaurants that feel the short-term cash benefit outweighs the long-term negative effects to their online reputation.
